POLLYANNA NO MORE

I grew up in a time when folks actually believed government had the best interests of those governed at heart…

…a time of statesmen, consensus building, a time with a naive electorate.  In many ways, I was like an ostrich with my head stuck in the sand.  I told myself I was apolitical, not very interested in the process.  In reality, whether it was true or not, I trusted my government to do the right thing.

That was then.  This is now.

I do not categorize myself as an activist, but I am passionate about the state of the food available to us in American at this point in time.  I firmly believe that if you don’t eat quality food  you are not capable of right-thinking, problem solving, developing a satisfying lifestyle that encourages wellness and happiness.   That concept became my slogan as I started my coaching business:

EAT CLEANLY.  THINK CLEARLY.  LIVE FULLY!

When the profits of big agriculture and companies like Monsanto drive the decisions made by the Department of Agriculture and the FDA, it becomes clear that the welfare and health of the American people is not at the forefront of decision making in Washington.  I applaud Michelle Obama for focusing on childhood obesity, growing gardens, and eating from a more healthy food plan.  However, if the food available in the grocery stores for the majority of shoppers is Genetically Modified, laced with pesticides, fungicides, growth hormones, and antibiotics, we are in trouble.  It’s great to have that backyard or container vegetable garden, but if the seeds you plant are engineered with Round-Up in that DNA, it is an exercise in lip service only.

I think Americans need to become food warriors.  We need to watch that old movie, “Network”, and take a page from that playbook:

“All I know is that first you’ve got to get mad. You’ve got to say, ‘I’m a HUMAN BEING, God damn it! My life has VALUE!’ So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, ‘I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!’ I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell – ‘I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Things have got to change. But first, you’ve gotta get mad!… You’ve got to say, ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!'”

Or is it possible that years of eating crap food has drugged us into a state of inertia so deep that we aren’t capable of demanding something as simple, as basic as clean nourishment..because we can’t think clearly anymore.
