Wellness News

The Lecture and Client Tutorial: Beyond Sciatic Pain, The Benefits of Myo-fascial Stretching, that was originally scheduled for July 6 will be rescheduled in either August or September.

Several weeks ago, Scott was invited to sit down and speak about Legacy’s Center of Excellence and all that it entails. The link to that Podcast is attached below. Topics of discussion included What is ELDOA?, the benefits of using the ELDOA exercises, what is Legacy’s Center of Excellence and how did it come to be, and more.

Listen to the Podcast

This past Spring, a significant number of clients visited the Sport and Wellness Center for issues related to tennis and pickle ball. In the Sports Performance section below, Scott will briefly discuss one common factor in all of these cases and a brief example of how to prepare for a game of tennis or pickle ball.

Cardiac Center News

If you are new to our community, or have not visited our Center in Dallas, we have an area in our gym dedicated to Cardiovascular Health and Training. Clients use the area for a proper warm-up to their private sessions and group workouts. On the white board in the Cardiac Center there are several different workouts clients can choose to do. Each workout targets a different part of the cardiovascular system. The Cardiac Center is used for aerobic training programs and testing, too.

Sports & Performance News

This past weekend the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament concluded. In the past, Scott has consulted with a number of professional players who have competed in this prestigious tennis tournament. Several months ago, a number of amateur tennis and pickle ball players came to our Center for issues related to their respective game. Injuries among the group included ankle sprain, achilles tendon strain, patella femoral syndrome, ACL rupture, rotator cuff strain, labral tears, and back pain.

Two common links amongst all these cases were poorly organized training programs and insufficient warm-up before playing a match. One big difference between professional and amateur players is a well organized warm-up session. Below is an example of a general warm-up for these two activities:

• jogging around the court or in place for 2 to 3 minutes to elevate resting heart rate
• a joint warm-up for all the joints involved in the match
• muscle solicitation for the principal muscles used in the activity
• activity/sports specific movement

And on completion of the match, at minimum, a few minutes dedicated to specific myo-fascial stretches (MFS).

One additional sports performance tip that Scott recommends to all his tennis and pickle ball players is to stop playing for a minimum of two weeks at the end of each season. A number of the injuries listed above were the result of playing year round without a break, or playing too much each week without proper gym training, MFS stretching, and soft tissue work.

Professional athletes play a sport because it’s their job. Amateurs compete for fun. Amateur athletics and weekly activity should not result in major injury.

July Sports Tip: Triple Digit Weather in Texas

Upon completion of your summer activities or games, allow time for several specific Myo-fascial Stretches (MFS). MFS following a workout is optimal because your body is warm and you want to normalize your tissue from the work session. If your time is limited after a workout, then do your stretches at night – TV Stretch/ELDOA. Then hydrate!

Lifestyle & Recovery Center

The Client Sauna Tutorial is scheduled from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Saturday, July 27.

Discussion Topics Include: What is the optimal temperature, how long is a sauna session, do I sauna on the day that I play sports, how much water do I drink in and after a sauna session, and do I use cold water immersion with a dry sauna session…these are are topics of discussion in the Client Sauna Tutorial July 13. This Tutorial is taught in the Sauna with Scott. We encourage everyone with a Sauna Card to complete this Tutorial. The knowledge gained during this time in the Sauna creates a better Sauna experience.

Legacy’s four-hour Sauna Certification Course (SomaTraining Program) is offered in Summer School. To enroll, go to eShop on the Legacy website. This is scheduled for August 9 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm and August 14 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm.

Topics of discussion include the importance of sweating, what is the optimal time for a single sauna session, what is the optimal temperature to use in a Dry Sauna, how to use cold water exposure by itself, or in combination with the dry sauna, and the importance of drinking water.

As part of the Course Theory, all the participants complete the Ruffier (Pulse) Test. This simple test can be used in different aspects of a Wellness or Sports Performance Program including the length of time in a Sauna Session and exposure to cold water.

Wild Orange Essential Oil – for in the Sauna or out: Claudia

This essential oil is expressed from the outer peel of the citrus fruit and can be used anytime. It may cause photosensitivity on skin when exposed to sunlight so don’t use and then go out to sunbathe.

This oil is refreshing, uplifting, and creates a sense of well-being as well as being anti-spasmodic, carminative (gastric relief), digestive and stomachic.

Use of this oil aids digestion, helps with colic, stomach pain or heartburn. It encourages positive disposition when tired or lacking energy. Wild Orange can be uplifting to the mind when affected by negative thoughts. Because this is a strong oil, if applying directly to the skin, always use a carrier oil or lotion, never directly out of the bottle.

If using in the sauna, it is great for an afternoon pick-me-up session or for those who sauna in the morning and need a bit of a wake-up experience. And it just smells so good!

Water Bar News

Water is a big deal at Legacy. In fact, water is Nature’s First Medicine. One hundred cases of water were delivered this week.

Buy water in bulk at the old pricing until July 15. Prices will increase due to shipping costs doubling. We are working on a solution. One idea is a Water Club for those who buy in bulk. We have several clients who take advantage of this service. Once details are fleshed out, we will invite you to participate.

Another Texas summer is close at hand: staying hydrated is easy with Legacy’s Water Bar.!
