Last month Legacy hosted David Getoff for a two day talk on toxins and toxicity. One section of his lecture was the importance of sun exposure and vitamin D. SPF sunscreens block the production of vitamin D.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin (meaning you need to take a supplement with food containing fat) and it can affect as many as 2000 genes in the body. The vitamin D you get from sunlight has to be changed by your body a number of times before it can be used. Vitamin D is unique in that when you body gets it, it turn vitamin d into a hormone sometimes called “calcitriol” or “activated vitamin D”.
Some of the functions of vitamin D are help with:
• immune system
• muscle function
• cardio-vascular function
• respiratory system
• brain development
• anti-cancer effects
• strong, healthy bones
