We are always talking about the havoc that American grains can wreck on your gut, but did you know that scientists say refined carbs like white bread, pasta, and rice could also affect your mind? Post-menopausal women especially could be at a higher risk for depression.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study done by the National Institutes of Health’s women’s health initiative between 1994 and 1998. The more women consumed added sugars and refined grains (and the higher their score on the glycemic index) the more they were at risk of new-onset depression.

This suggests that dietary change might be a great intervention and preventative measure for depression.

Of course, we have also been talking about the gut as the second brain, so it the gut is in trouble can the brain really be healthy?
